Eve McMahon, 16 years old, currently training with the Irish Sailing Laser Radial Team and a member of Howth YC, won the 2019 Irish Sailing Youth Sailor of the Year award on Saturday night. Eve is currently in Transition Year and is part of the McMahon sailing family – her brother Ewan is on the Irish Sailing Laser Team, and her other brother Jamie was nominated for the Irish Sailing Sailor of the Year.
The Irish Sailing Youth Sailor of the Year Award is given to a young sailor under the age of 18 who has achieved an excellent performance representing Ireland internationally.
At such a young age in a youth class Eve McMahon has achieved amazing things this year. After winning the spot to represent Ireland at the World Sailing Youth World Championships that were held in Poland, the summer saw Eve going from strength to strength. She finished 7th at the Italian Europa Cup held on Lake Garda and in the summer with an amazing string of results finished 3rd overall and 1st Under 17 at the Laser Radial youth world championships held in Canada. Eve has made the most of her flexibility in Transition Year by linking up as a training partner with the Olympic laser radial team. Training and racing amongst them has allowed her to progress even more and after a stint away in Australia where she claimed the U17 crown at Sail Melbourne has recently completed her first Open World Championships. Eve still in the U17 category for 2020 and has her eyes fixed on more silverware this summer.
